FRIBOURG AS SEEN BY…
CANTON OF FRIBOURG – SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED
The Maison Cailler in Broc is one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing in almost 420,000 visitors every year.
“If I compare the canton of Fribourg now to what it was like when I arrived 20 years ago, the change is nothing short of amazing, both economically and demographically”, notes Ted McNamara. “Of course, it has changed for the better, though I have to admit that I get a little bit nostalgic sometimes!” Although said somewhat jokingly, it was precisely Fribourg’s “human scale” which won over the Floridian from the moment he arrived. This former executive, who has worked for international firms like Tupperware, Atmel and Actuate, feels so much at home here that he has said that he will never leave, even though his grandchildren live in Florida. “In the US, everything is huge, distances are massive, and it’s stressful.” In contrast, Ted McNamara revels in the fact that “everything is local”, albeit with a certain cosmopolitan flair. “Take restaurants, for example. You can go for a pho at the tiny Vietnamese eatery, Le Lotus, sample the dish of the day at Ben & Léo, and indulge in proper fine-dining at the Trois Tours. What more could you ask for?”
