A NATURAL AND LIVING ENVIRONMENT LIKE NO OTHER
TOUGH ON FOOD SAFETY

Eating healthily is a good thing but knowing where the food on your plate comes from is even better! As Jacques Bourgeois, the head of the Swiss Farmers’ Union, explains, locally sourced, quality produce is extremely important to the people and the authorities of Fribourg, just as it is elsewhere in Switzerland. The man from Fribourg takes food safety very seriously: “A whole raft of measures has been introduced to make sure that food products are unimpeachable and of high added value.” Consequently, Swiss farmers have to comply with some of the most stringent regulations in the world – environmental compatibility, animal welfare, ban on GMOs, economical use of crop protection products and antibiotics, to name but a few. As the National Councillor readily admits, total food self-sufficiency in Switzerland is illusory. Nonetheless, foodstuffs should be sourced from domestic producers, wherever possible. “In Switzerland, every second food product is made here. Given demographic trends and the growing scarcity of natural resources, the challenge will be maintaining the status quo.”
